How to choose maternity leggings

For many pregnant women, leggings are the first and most-worn maternity item. The difference between comfortable and irritating lies in the waistband, the fabric, and whether they are opaque enough and warm enough for the time of year.

Three types of waistband

The waistband is what sets maternity leggings apart from ordinary ones. You will come across three basic designs:

Three types of maternity legging waistband Three legging silhouettes: with a high over-bump panel, with a low under-bump waistband and with a wide fold-over waistband. Over-bump panel a high, soft band covers the whole bump Under-bump waistband a low band sits below the bump Fold-over waistband a wide band worn pulled up or folded down
The green area shows the waistband or panel. Which one suits you depends on the shape of your bump and on whether you are comfortable with pressure below it.

Conscan be warm in summer; a weak panel rolls downcan slip with a big bumpthe fold sometimes shifts

The panel should be soft and stretchy, not shaping. Maternity leggings are not there to “shape” your bump, but to let it grow.

Size

  • Start with your usual size and check it on the maker’s chart. Hip measurement and leg length in centimetres matter most.1
  • If you are between two sizes, the smaller one is usually better in a stretchy knit, so the leggings don’t go baggy at the knees and seat.
  • Check the leg length separately. If you are tall, it is worth looking for styles that state the inside leg.
  • The changing-room test: bend forward and squat. If the waistband slips or the fabric goes see-through, it will be worse in real life.

Fabric and thickness

What the label saysWhat it means in practice
Cotton with elastanebreathes, comfortable all day; less elastane = goes baggy at the knees sooner
Viscose or modal with elastanesoft, drapey, cool; some types bobble over time
Polyamide or polyester with elastane (sports)firm, opaque, quick-drying; breathe less in the warm
Brushed back, “thermal”warm for cold days; may be too warm in a heated office
Denim look (jeggings)look like trousers; a firmer fabric, watch the waistband

The weight of the knit (g/m²), if the maker gives it, often tells you its thickness. For everyday wear without a tunic, it is worth going for a thicker, opaque knit.

Winter maternity leggings

Winter leggings are usually lined with a brushed back, fleece or a thicker knit. When choosing, check:

  • how the panel is lined. If it is thick over the bump too, you may overheat in a heated room; a thinner panel with lined legs is a compromise.
  • whether the inside is soft and doesn’t slip, so the leggings don’t slide down as you walk.
  • length: winter leggings should cover your ankles even in shoes.
  • how they go with a coat that won’t do up over the bump. You will find solutions in the article Winter maternity clothes.

In hard frost, layering (thinner leggings plus a base layer or wool knee socks) works better than one thick layer that you can’t take off indoors.

Leggings for the occasion

OccasionWhat to look for
Office, sitting all daya soft over-bump panel that doesn’t roll when you sit; a thicker opaque knit
Walks and exercisea firmer sports knit, flat seams, a phone pocket on the side
Summera thin breathable knit or an under-bump waistband; calf-length leggings
Outdoors in winterlined leggings, or thin leggings with a base layer
Under dresses and tunicsthinner leggings without prominent seams
The first weeks after the birtha soft, high panel that doesn’t dig in; a fabric that stands up to frequent washing

If you are buying just one pair, go for a fold-over waistband and a medium weight. They cover the most situations.

What to watch out for

  • A waistband that digs in at the hips or under the bump. It tends to be worse at the end of the day than in the morning.
  • See-through fabric when you bend over and in daylight.
  • Seams on the inner thighs that rub.
  • Panels that wrinkle after washing and roll down. Washing at a lower temperature and drying without a tumble dryer helps.

How long you will wear them

Leggings with an over-bump panel are usually worn from the second trimester until the birth and for a few weeks after it. Styles with a fold-over waistband can be worn longer, because you fold the band down once the bump is gone. Leggings without a maternity waistband in your usual size usually won’t be comfortable to get into in the third trimester.

Frequently asked questions

When should I buy my first maternity leggings?

When your usual trousers start to dig in at the waist, or you find yourself wearing them undone. For many women this is in the second trimester, for others sooner. There is no reason to wait for a particular week.

Is an over-bump panel or an under-bump waistband better?

An over-bump panel keeps leggings in place and is warm in winter, but some women find it hot in summer. An under-bump waistband covers nothing, but with a bigger bump it can slip. If you are not sure, start with a fold-over waistband that can be worn either way.

Can I wear maternity leggings after the birth?

For the first weeks, yes, while your tummy shrinks. Later a high panel usually wrinkles. Leggings with a fold-over waistband stay in your wardrobe longer.
